Five Largest Cities:
Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin,Palermo Population of Rome 2,404,026 Estimate Populations Using Rank-Size Rule Milan- 1,202,013 Naples- 801,342 Turin- 601,007 Palermo- 480,806 Actual Populations Milan- 1,328,158 Naples- 928,300 Turin- 849,777 Palermo- 630,502 In Italy, the rank-size rule is semi-accurate. For the second and third largest cities, the estimates are very close to correct. But as you get further down in city rank, however, the estimates and actual populations start to develope an ever-widening gap. Because of this large gap, I would most likely classify the rank-size rule invalid for Italy. Although there are certain arguements for its validity as well, I believe the gap in population is a good reason to believe it invalid. |
